2023 is all about maximalism – with the return of bold statements and personality pieces being expressed through color, texture, and sustainable decor – we’re all about going big. We’re loving the direction design is taking us this year. In fact, we’re already seeing a lot of these trends pop up in the properties we represent. Keep on reading for 5 home design trends that you will be seeing a lot of this year.
1. Bold Colors
Pantone chose Viva Magenta as the Color of the Year – a vibrant mix of pink, purple, and red – which is fitting for this year’s return of color.
Neutral colors have been very popular over the past few years, but those are now taking a back seat, as bold and jewel tones are taking over.
While the “white everything” trend is falling flat, this doesn’t mean that white is out completely. We are seeing tons of contrast – whites being mixed with moody, saturated colors such as deep blue, green or orange.
Whether it’s an accent wall, cabinets, or bedding, expect plenty pops of color this year.
2. Old & Re-Used is NEW
The need for everything “new” and “matching” is not as popular right now. Instead, people are incorporating vintage, antique pieces that are thrifted or bought second-hand.
This is not only a sustainable choice, but a personality choice as well. DIY is very popular at the moment with people buying used furniture and decor and making their own personalized upgrades to them.
Terms such as “Coastal Grandma,” “Grandmillenial” and “Country Club Grandpa” are making a splash on social media.
3. Tile
Textured and three-dimensional tiles are popping up everywhere. These tiles give surfaces an organic, handcrafted feel while also giving a room dimension. We will be seeing this expressed in backsplashes, showers, and even entire walls.
Zellige tile is also having a moment, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Originally handmade in Morocco, these tiles are handcrafted from clay, with each tile having a unique glaze, color, and texture.
4. Natural Stone Finishes
Stone isn’t exactly a “new” trend, but the type of stone – less common ones like soapstone and travertine are becoming popular – and how it’s being used – mixing different stones in one space or countertops continuing up a backsplash – is what’s making a statement.
Other ways to incorporate natural stone finishes into your space are by adding clay vases, ceramics and pottery, and stoneware and dinnerware.
5. Pattern
Once reserved for small accent walls in powder or laundry rooms, over-the-top wallpaper is now becoming mainstream again, but this time in larger, communal spaces.
Pattern can be used in smaller ways as well, such as adding floral pillows to a sofa, adding patterned drapes, or patterned tablecloths to a dining room table.
One of the best parts of our job is seeing beautiful homes everyday across Malibu and Los Angeles. Because of this, we get to see how our clients design and style their homes. Although there are so many different trends that become popular throughout the years, the most important thing is making sure your home is a reflection of you and your personality.
