Burnout Permit Fee’s Waived Until 2021

July 16, 2020

The City of Malibu has extended permit fee waivers for all properties affected by the Woolsey Fires until the end of 2020. An important note: this waiver only to property owners who used their properties as a primary residence during the Woolsey Fire.

The June 22nd deadline has been extended for 6 months until December 30th, 2020. For properties lost in the fire, rebuilding “like for like” or plus 10%, this involves the waiving of planning and building permit fees.

With just 5 homes completed in mid-July of 2020, ongoing insurance claims, and delays due to Coronavirus, the City has recognized the need to take admirable steps to help:

  • Waived or refunded $2.22 million in fees up to $6.24 million.
  • In total, waived fees could exceed $5.8 million.
  • This was done by using staff instead of consultants and applying a large portion of the City’s Woolsey Fire settlement from Southern California Edison.

For original primary residents rebuilding, this is an important date to keep in mind. The rights to the expedited permit process extend beyond this deadline but owners will be subject to fees that represent a significant expense. In regards to purchasing a burnout lot, though the waiver does not extend to new owners, the inventory is quickly dwindling. To take full advantage of the benefits these lots offer, the time is now to make a move.
