Malibu, CA | 3.16.2020
Coronavirus has quickly become a worldwide pandemic, closing schools, restaurants, and workplaces all over the country.
We are not medical professionals and we urge readers to seek out the appropriate resources for those questions. As Malibu locals, this is meant to act as a guide for the current situation and actions that can be taken moving forward.

What is Closed
For an up to date closures list, please click here. Provided by the Malibu Times.
Due to the Coronavirus, the Santa Monica and Malibu district public schools will remain closed until further notice. Private schools closed their doors last week and Pepperdine University has canceled the remainder of their semester and will move to online classes. Many schools have only committed to closing for two weeks. This will allow them time to monitor the situation and act accordingly.
The governor has also called for the closure of bars and restaurants. While going out for a bite may not be an option, many local restaurants including Sunlife, Chipotle, Nicolas Eatery, and many more establishments will be accepting to-go orders. Others are delivering through Postmates.
Gyms and fitness centers have also been called to a close.
Where to Get Food
At this point, all of Malibu’s grocery stores remain open. That said, many have been thoroughly picked through. Most are set for a big restock early this week and the essentials should be available once again! Ralphs, Whole Foods, Pavilions, and Vintage Grocers remain open.
An important note here: please do not hoard food and amenities. The Malibu community must avoid the temptation to panic and remember that everyone, not just you, needs food to eat. For the elderly who are especially at risk, many of our amazing neighbors have offered to pick up groceries and other essentials! Visit nextdoor.com and create a post or contact someone who has offered.

What You Can Do to Help
It is an overwhelming and uncertain time for all of us. Here is what you can actively be doing:
- Stay calm. With the 24-hour news cycle and alerts coming straight to our phones, the anxiety of this scenario is never far away. It is easy to forget that peace and a clear mind is also available to us. There are amazing meditation apps, online yoga classes, and other resources to help restore balance.
- Wash your hands. It may seem to be common sense, but a 20-second hand washing is the most important step you can take to involuntarily spread the virus.
- Limit social interaction. While this may seem harsh and reactionary, limiting our interactions with people outside of our immediate sphere is the best way to slow the spread of Coronavirus. For an in-depth analysis of how and why this is effective, read this article from The Washington Post which is a great resource.
- Take care of yourself. Eat healthy, exercise, and do things that bring you joy. For those of you who are already feeling down since the closures of local gyms, there are several great online resources:
- Alo Yoga has put their classes online for free.
- ClassPass members can access a huge library of online audio and video workouts.
- 5 Point Yoga and our friend, Ted McDonald, will be using Facebook Live to share yoga classes. Tune in here.
- Elizabeth Grether of Malibu Health and Fitness has been posting great workouts on Instagram that you can do at home. Follow her here.
- Trails and beaches remain open for now. Get outside! Just remember to maintain 6 feet of distance from those around you, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and keep washing those hands.
Malibu Strong
Take a deep breath; we will get through this together. If you are young and healthy, remember that although you may be at less of a risk, you could potentially spread the virus to someone who is more at risk. Be courteous, be kind, be thankful, and stay well.
