Malibu residents need no reminder that it is peak fire season. Historically, this spans during the driest parts of the year, July through November.
It is during these months that wildfire risks are at their peak. Threat factors include hot, dry, windy weather, brush moisture levels, and Santa Ana winds. In 2020, the large areas of Northern California, Portland, and Southern California have already battled massive fires amidst hot, dry conditions.
Unfortunately, a La Nina weather pattern has now formed. In addition to fewer winter storms and colder water (as surfers heave a collective sigh), this means that more hurricanes are likely on the East Coast and for the Southwest, a dryer and windier fall and winter. While La Nina’s strength is unknown, the East Coast has already hit a record number of storms. Meanwhile, the West Coast has battled unprecedented fires.
Hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. Wildfires are part of living in Malibu. Here is a simple checklist to be prepared heading into Malibu’s most infamous months:
- Read, download, or print the Malibu Survival Guide
- Have a plan! Know the threats of your area, identify meeting places, know evacuation routes, know utility shut off locations, identify safe spots, have extra medications ready, and make any necessary special provisions.
- Have essential items ready. This includes a first aid kit, contact list, cash and credit cards, important personal documents, a change of clothes, toiletries, specialty items, and significant personal items. Flashlights, tools, a radio, water, and food are also advised.
- Animal Preparedness. Have a means of transportation, food, water, medication, and clear identification.
- Sign up for alerts. Visit nixle.com, enter your zip code, and choose the agencies whose alerts you wish to receive.
- Meet with Fire Safety Liaison. They will assess your property’s wildfire risk, and provide a checklist of ways that you can harden your homes against flying embers free of charge. To schedule an appointment, email FireSafety@malibucity.org or call 310-456-2489, ext. 387.
