Spring’s in action and spending more time at home over the past year has caused many of us to take up new hobbies — one of the most popular being gardening. For those that are new to the green thumb world, it’s important to know the best environment for your plants in order to keep them healthy and alive. Although some plants are easier to care for than others, there are certain factors that can contribute to their lasting health including sunlight, environmental benefits, and natural care. Here are some room-by-room tips for choosing the best indoor plants for your home:
Living Room
Larger-scale plants are best for the living room as they add some much needed color and drama. The Fiddle-Leaf Fig Tree is extremely popular for their large waxy leaves and tropical look. You will see these being used everywhere by interior designers and on social media. They are also popular with new plant owners although most don’t realize the amount of maintenance they require — including plenty of sunlight, proper drainage, warmer climate, and clean leaves. Other examples of plants that can thrive in the living room include Rubber plants, Monstera plant, and Cyclamen.
Kitchen
Herbs are a natural plant choice for your kitchen as they are low maintenance and can be used for cooking. Basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary are a few examples, some of which can be bought directly from the grocery store. Having these in your kitchen will not only give you access to fresh, edible plants, but it can also be the perfect decorative piece as well.
Bedroom
Some plants emit more oxygen than others making them great natural purifiers for when you sleep. This includes Snake plants which are widely popular because they are low maintenance as they don’t need a lot of watering or much light. They are also popular in smaller spaces as they grow vertical so you don’t have to worry about excessive leaves taking up space. Other air purifying plants include Spider plants, Gerbera Daisies, Pothos, Aloe Vera, and the Peace Lily.
Bathroom
A more fragile plant such as an Orchid is likely one of the only plants that can thrive in the bathroom. Orchids are difficult to maintain and require specialized care and certain levels of humidity. These plants can die easily from overwatering so the steam from a shower can provide the perfect amount of moisture.
It’s never too late to start your at-home garden and these are a few tips to get you started. Although every plant needs to be properly maintained and cared for, being placed in the right environment is the first and most important step.
