When many people think of Malibu, they immediately jump to visions of huge gated estates and gilded celebs sipping fruity cocktails. What many people fail to realize is just how much wildness there is left in the Malibu area, specifically in Point Dume, Malibu.
The Point Dume promontory is known for having some of the most striking natural beach and cliff views in America, and the huge waves beating up against the rocky crags of the promontory never fail to impress even the most seasoned of Malibu residents.
The wild, unspoiled Point Dume region is a favorite spot for outdoor sports, including rock climbing, surfing, and scuba diving. There are numerous facilities for hikers as well, including some very well maintained trails, including one that leads all the way to the top of a bluff, where the view is to die for.
And, if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the grand California gray whales when they pass by on their yearly migration.
From Treeless Buff to Point Dume, Malibu Homesteads
In the beginning, Point Dume, Malibu was a windblown, treeless bluff covered by native chaparral. After World War Two, homesteaders began to settle in the bluff, where they planted trees and other non-native flora.
The first school to open in the area in 1968 was Point Dume Elementary, but it closed down in 1980. However, more families moved to the area, and it reopened in 1996. It is now called Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School.
Shopping and Dining
The shopping center of Malibu is only a short drive away, but there a few local restaurants and businesses that serve the neighborhood. Offering the best sunset views is The Sunset Malibu restaurant located right on the beach on Westward Beach Road. There’s also Geoffrey’s Malibu, with great cliffside views, and Malibu Seafood which serves up the freshest fish meals with fantastic ocean views. Spruzzo’s and Kristy’s are also very close to Point Dume, Malibu.
Point Dume Plaza features a grocery store, several eateries and other businesses.
