Spring has sprung in Malibu – but where are the flowers?
Every April, Malibu’s wildflowers explode in an array of bright colors throughout the coastal hills and Santa Monica Mountains. This comes after our rainiest months, typically January through March.
Compared with the previous two years, this year’s bloom is noticeably more subdued. What’s to blame? Is Malibu in a drought?
La Niña Weather Pattern
California is experiencing a La Niña weather pattern this year. While the Pacific North West receives more storms and generally experiences a wetter winter in La Niña years, the Southwest has dryer years than normal.
In the case of Southern California, we also experience more frequent Santa Ana Wind and wind events during La Niña. Our mid-April Santa Ana’s this month were very out of character for Malibu.
Are We In a Drought?
Technically, Malibu and California are NOT in a drought. An official drought can only be declared by the governor. This releases funds to several agencies.
We are, however, experiencing drought-like conditions. Click here to visit the California Drought Monitor website.
Malibu, Los Angeles and Ventura County are all currently in the D2 phase, classified as a “Severe Drought.” Comparing the numbers this April with last year’s, the difference is clear.

The most severe drought is in Northern and Central California. Also heavily affected is Inyo County, where many Malibu residents go skiing in the winter and escape to in summer.
The good news is that California’s extensive reservoir system is capable of handling multiple dry years and for now, the state has not declared a drought. Since La Niña is often followed by El Niño, hopefully, a rainy year is just around the corner.
Water Conservation and Fire Safety
What can Malibu residents be doing to help with this situation?
For one, conserve water. There are still many rebate programs that reward homeowners for upgrades that reduce water usage.
The second is preparing for wildfires and fireproofing our homes. We have an upcoming episode of The Malibu Podcast with Chris Brossard, the Malibu Fire Safety Liaison, with best practices and more information on Malibu Fire safety protocol!
