Escondido Beach in Malibu is one of those areas that most people come across accidentally. Translated, escondido means “hidden.” The epithet certainly fits this enclosed and private area. With little traffic and a narrow access road, it’s easy to feel like you are truly away from it all when you’re in Escondido Beach.
You can access the community of Escondido Beach from Escondido Beach Road. The road runs parallel to the Pacific Coast Highway, about four miles south of Kanan-Dume Road. The road travels up to the bluff, just below Geoffrey’s Malibu restaurant.
Escondido Beach Malibu Homes
Besides the privacy, another big draw of the Escondido Beach area is the housing. Most of the Malibu homes are well designed, and are surprisingly large for beachfront properties. Many were built in the 1940s and 50s, and that old-time quality certainly shows. However, many Malibu homeowners upgraded their homes, and combined them to form larger Malibu estates.
The beauty of living in Escondido Beach is that many of the homes are literally steps from the beach. Other are located on the other side of Escondido Road, with stairs that lead down to the bluff.
What to Do
Escondido Beach is also known for the quality of the beach itself. It is a haven for kayakers and divers, who take full advantage of the gorgeous reefs and kelp forests that exist relatively close to the shore.
The area is popular for fishing, and is the natural habitat of many giant black sea bass and giant kelpfish.
For the adventurous, the nearby Monterey Bay Aquarium has a white shark pen where visitors can see the sharks in their natural environment.
If you like to hike the Escondido Falls are a beautiful during springtime.
What Else is There?
One of Malibu’s longtime restaurants, Geoffrey’s, is close by for outdoor dining with a view.
The nearest schools are Webster Elementary, about a four miles drive south on the PCH. Malibu High School is the same distance but north on the PCH.
For shopping, Escondido Beach is in the middle of the main shopping areas of Cross Creek Road, where the Malibu Country Mart, Malibu Lumber Mall, and Malibu Village are. Restaurants and stores are also in nearby Point Dume.
