No Waves, No Worries
Though Malibu is viewed as a surf mecca with constant swells, this is sadly not the case. The surf rarely rises above 3-4 ft. during the Summer months and Winter can be flat for months at a time. However, there is plenty to do in the ocean even if you aren’t surfing!
Paddleboarding has rapidly gained popularity and for good reason. It is great exercise, an amazing way to explore the coastline, and relaxing! Malibu, in particular, has a large number of people that enjoy the sport; that said, it is also important to know where to go and when. Here is our team’s guide to paddleboarding in Malibu!
Where to Get Started
One of the easiest beaches to get acquainted with paddleboarding is Escondido Beach! This is due to its sandy shoreline, close breaking waves, and a kelp bed that helps to keep the wind from chopping up the water. Launching here is very easy and if you head North, you can visit Paradise Cove by the sea!
Best Beaches for Stand-Up Surfing
Once you master paddling on flat water, for some, it is time to move on to actually riding waves! There are special boards made for this, and it is important to have a good amount of experience. With a board this large in any sort of swell, you’ll need to have enough control to avoid other surfers and beachgoers.
In addition to this, not every board is created equal: stand up paddlers can see the wave well before surfers and can generally catch them earlier. Still, this doesn’t mean they get to take every wave. Share the stoke, take turns, and be respectful. It’s more fun for everyone that way!
The best beach for stand-up paddle surfing is Latigo Point, located just past Malibu Seafood! The gentle waves rolling down the point are perfect for the bigger boards, and on good days can provide incredibly long rides. This is a known paddle spot, but it is shared by surfers as well.
Ready to Get Started!
Now that you know the ins-and-outs of paddling in Malibu, it’s time to get out there! There are great surf shops in Malibu that you can rent paddleboards from, we recommend Drill Surf and Skate. You can take a lesson or simply have them dropped off, it’s that easy!
If you’re ready to commit to a paddleboard, an inflatable one can be a great option! Durable, light to carry, and collapsible as needed. We recommend you head over to InflatableBoarder.com for reviews, buying guides and more.
